Advocacy group in The Bahamas denounces church’s LGBT stance

Advocacy group, Rights Bahamas has described as “bigoted and intolerant” the views of the Bahamas Christian Council (BCC) regarding plans by Pride Bahamas to stage a series of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) events in October 2020.

In a statement earlier this week, the BCC said it does not support any plan to host public LGBT events anywhere within the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

‘as a body of churches we hold firmly to the tenets of our faith which speak directly to the lifestyle and practice of homosexuality.’

BCC said: “While we appreciate that The Bahamas is a democracy which gives people the right to freedom of speech and expression from a legal perspective, as a body of churches we hold firmly to the tenets of our faith which speak directly to the lifestyle and practice of homosexuality. We believe it is in direct contradiction to the teachings of the Bible as it relates to God’s divine plan for male and female existence and the natural purpose of their individual and unique physical construct, sexual identity and sexual expression,” it added.

But in its statement Rights Bahamas said that it welcomes the BCC’s announcement that it will take to the streets to have its voice heard regarding Pride Bahamas 2020.

‘Rights Bahamas celebrates all instances when individuals and groups take advantage of their rights.’

Rights Bahamas said: “Bigoted and intolerant though their views may be in the eyes of many, the pastors have a constitutional right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, just like everyone else. Rights Bahamas celebrates all instances when individuals and groups take advantage of their rights.”

The human rights group said that the BCC “might want to carefully consider the message they are sending, not only to the local public, but also to the international organisations that are currently in the Bahamas providing millions of dollars in Hurricane Dorian Relief aid”.
