Should a woman propose to a man?

It is all about female empowerment and equal rights in 2019. Yet, some believe that some traditions should remain, one of which is that when it comes to proposing marriage, it is the man that should extend the offer and get down on one knee.

Indeed, it seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The general sentiment among women is that men should continue to propose. This way, they believe, it will be verified that they are desired and selected; but more importantly, that the man is sure about his decision to be committed to one woman and one woman only.

Worst case scenario – he agrees to the proposal…while he tries to find a way out of his unfortunate predicament.

Some experts see nothing wrong with a woman proposing, as they feel some liberal thinking males would appreciate a woman showing that much initiative and thought to make them feel special. These, however, are not popular sentiments.

Most people when polled think that a man would not only find a proposal of marriage aggressive and forceful on the woman’s part, but may actually come across as her demonstrating that in the marriage she intends to wear the pants and dominate her husband.

By proposing she has obviously decided to take the matter into her own hands. But her actions may prove to be counterproductive because if he is not invested or ready, she may spark resentment for ‘calling him out’ publicly and putting him in a situation that can potentially frustrate and/or embarrass him.

He may say yes in front of her family and friends but really has no intention of going through with it. Worst case scenario – he agrees to the proposal and then extends it into a very long engagement while he tries to find a way out of his unfortunate predicament.

Truth be told, if he was going to marry you, he would have proposed long ago.

Many women have been weaned on books and magazines that paint an unrealistic picture of what relationships and marriage should be. They are told that they must get married; should do so by a certain age; that every relationship over a year should lead to marriage or if they do not get married then they are less than and something is wrong with them. None of which is accurate.

It makes no sense to back a man into a corner by proposing. Truth be told, if he was going to marry you, he would have proposed long ago.
