The highly-anticipated Verzuz battle between Ashanti and Keyshia Cole did not happen last night as the former revealed she has tested positive for COVID-19.
The Foolish singer made the announcement on her Instagram page an hour before the battle’s scheduled start.
“Hey y’all I can’t believe I’m saying this but I tested positive for COVID-19,” she wrote. “I’m ok and not in any pain. I’m 1000% down to do the Verzuz from my house… we’re trying to figure it out!!!”
But the in-person format of Verzuz has reigned since the Beenie Man and Bounty Killer clash in May, and with the increased commercialization of the virtual program, reverting to “home” streams was highly unlikely. The official instagram account for Verzuz subsequently announced a new date for the match-up: January 9, 2021.
“Unfortunately, we have to postpone tonight’s @Ashanti vs @KeyshiaCole #VERZUZ,” they said in a statement. “Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19 beforehand, and we cannot put anyone at risk in the process. First time this has struck us so close to showtime. We apologize to our incredible audience! Get well soon, Ashanti. Wear a mask, stay inside, and take COVID-19 seriously. It’s truly affecting our community.”
The program has only had one postponement since it begun in the early stages of quarantine, which happened in April because of technical issues during Babyface and Teddy Riley’s showdown.
Fans were the least amused.
“So can y’all refund me for the money spent on my watch party food and drinks,” said one person.
“How y’all know she gone be better by January 9th?” one asked.
“So y’all can’t download zoom?”
“YOU KNOW WHAT IM DONE ! KEYSHIA WON!”
“If she scared she needa say tht.”
