Since the infancy of the Verzuz battle organised by producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland at the start of quarantine, fans have been suggesting their top MCs and singers to face off in a catalogue war.
Battles like Dr Dre versus Diddy, Monica versus Brandy and Jermaine Dupri versus Dallas Austin have been highly requested by followers of the Instagram series.
But this week, rapper DMX voiced his interest in battling 90s peer, Jay-Z.
‘The What’s My Name?’ rapper made the disclosure on Revolt TV’s ‘Drink Champs’ podcast.
“If you had a chance to battle any artiste right now, who would DMX battle?” host N.O.R.E asked.
“Jay,” DMX answered after a period of silence.
“Are we saying Jay-Z?”, N.O.R.E sought to clarify.
DMX responded, “Yeah, who you think ni**a?”
The clip has since gone viral on social media, with rap enthusiasts reflecting on the two’s rocky history.
The former label mates DMX and Jay-Z were the gems of Def Jam Records in the 90s, and later formed the rap group Murder Inc with fellow East Coast rapper Ja Rule.
HOV’s relationship with DMX went downhill as the years progressed, and was further publicised when DMX dragged his name in a freestyle at an Arizona concert in 2010.
The two seem to have since patched things up as DMX was seen chatting it up with Hov at Beyoncé’s final Formation World Tour stop in New Jersey in 2016.
Though some fans are sceptical of such a battle becoming reality because of Jay-Z’s social distancing on social media, only time will tell if he will ‘do it for the culture’.
