Serena Williams hit another hiccup on her road to a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title when she was forced to withdraw from the French Open due to injury.
Williams, who was knocked out at the semifinal stage of the US Open last month, withdrew from the tournament ahead of her meeting with Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria due to an Achilles injury.
“The Achilles didn’t have enough time to heal after the US Open,” said Williams, who admitted last week she was not fully fit after her run to the semi-finals in New York.
“I’m struggling to walk, so that’s kind of a tell-tale sign that I should try to recover.”
The 39-year-old will likely miss the rest of the 2020 season, further delaying her journey to equaling Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam titles.
Serena hasn’t won a major title since the Australian Open in 2017.
