Jamaica-Barbados feud heats up with citizen trade-off on Twitter

The online ‘island battle’ between Jamaica and Barbados continues with fervour on Twitter, as users of the social media platform have begun shipping off local celebrities they don’t want.

As the #RihannaIsJamaican hashtag went viral, some members of Jamaican Twitter have listed several notable, controversial or downright comedic personalities ‘no longer needed’ – since Rihanna, now belongs to the island.

Among the Jamaicans being stripped of their nationalities, new Barbadian citizens are disgraced politician Ruel Reid; athlete Warren Weir; entertainers D’Angel, Vegas and LA Lewis; as well as personalities Mackerel, Deno, Foota Hype and radio host Barry G.

On the Bajan side, Twitter users have shipped off their former Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who many have blamed for plundering the island’s economy.

Now, thousands of tweets have gone viral since Jamaicans launched their bold attempt to claim Rihanna as their own – with even established journalists, politicians and corporate companies joining the fun.

Among them, Mayor of Kingston Delroy Williams, journalist Dionne Jackson Miller, State Minister Floyd Green, and Senator Pearnel Charles Junior have all sworn to have met Rihanna along her journey as ‘Jamaica’s pop princess’.
