Jamaican-born footballer Leon Bailey has insisted the name of his son has nothing to do with that of two of the world’s greatest players.

Bailey, who named his son Leo Cristiano, has addressed reports that his was named after Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the two highest-earning players in the sport.
The Bayer Leverkusen player said his son is named after himself, with the second name being complementary.

He told German media house Bild, that “Leo is an abbreviation of Leon. And Leo is the lion – I am a lion. I believe that my son also grows up with the mentality of being a fighter and a leader. And Cristiano is a lovely name that goes well with Leo.”
Bailey’s son was born in June to him and partner, Stephanie Hope.
