The People’s National Party (PNP) picked up another seat following Jamaica’s general election Thursday which saw the party suffer a massive defeat.
The PNP’s Luther Buchanan was declared the winner of the Westmoreland Eastern constituency after a name was pulled from a hat today (September 6) to break the tie resulting from yesterday’s final count.
The incumbent Buchanan received 4,834 votes in the final count, the same as the Jamaica Labour Party’s Daniel Lawrence.
The win means that the PNP now has 15 parliamentary seats, to the JLP’s 48.
The JLP has indicated it will file for a magisterial recount.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica says the final counting of ballots from the general election continues today for 15 remaining constituencies.
