Popcaan pays tribute to Vybz Kartel

Dancehall artiste Popcaan may be one of the top acts in the genre at the moment, a success he attributes to his musical mentor, incarcerated entertainer ,Vybz Kartel.

Popcaan has been paying it forward, using his Twitter account on Monday (July 26) to thank the deejay for the instrumental role he played in the development of his artistry.

“Vybz Kartel ya real G, a nuff things man learn from you without you even saying a word. Yo respect a forever respect,” tweeted Popcaan.

Popcaan got his big break in dancehall, becoming a household name when he partnered with Vybz Kartel on the smash hit Clarks in 2010 along with fellow Gaza stablemate Vanessa Bling.

Despite seeing an end to their professional relationship in 2012, when Kartel dissolved the Portmore Empire, Popcaan has remained a vocal advocate for his freedom.

Vybz Kartel for his part remains behind bars at the Horizon Remand Centre in St Catherine but is currently in the process of appealing his sentence at the UK based Privy Council.
