Serena Williams began her French Open campaign with a win over fellow American Kristie Ahn at the Court Philippe Chatrier today (September 28).
Williams beat Ahn 7-6, 6-0 in the first round of the Grand Slam, a repeat of the outcome where the two also met in the first round of the US Open less than a month ago. “I mean, what are the odds?” said Ahn when asked about the draw.
Williams is after her 24th Grand Slam title that would bring her even with Margaret Court’s leading mark across all eras.
She has made it to the final of half of the last eight majors she has played, losing all four.
The tennis player, who recently turned 39, will next face Tsvetana Pironkova, who she beat in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
