Tyler Perry has donated US$100,000 to a GoFundMe page to support Kenneth Walker, the boyfriend of Breonna Taylor.
Perry made four contributions – two of US$10,000, a US$50,000 and US$30,000 – to the fund to help Walker and his legal team pass their goal of US$100,000 for a lawsuit brought against him.
The donations will go towards his legal expenses and other litigation matters.
Walker is being sued by one of the police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Taylor in March for battery, assault and emotional distress. The officer, Jonathan Mattingly, was shot by Walker, a licensed firearm holder, who has maintained he believed someone was trying to break into the apartment he shared with Taylor.
Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman, was killed on March 14 after officers executed a no-knock search warrant at her apartment during an investigation for a suspected drug dealer, who police allege once retrieved a package from the home.
The suspected drug dealer did not live at the apartment and had earlier been arrested elsewhere. No drugs were found at Taylor’s home.
Following the night’s events, the officer filed the suit claiming he’s suffered “severe trauma, mental anguish and emotional distress”.
