A Florida woman has given birth to the first baby born with COVID-19 antibodies after being vaccinated.
The mother, who is a frontline healthcare worker, received her first shot of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine while she was 36 weeks pregnant. Little did she know she’d be making the history when she delivered the baby girl three weeks later as the newborn is the first known case of a child being born with COVID antibodies in the United States.
The antibodies were found after analysing blood taken from the baby’s umbilical cord immediately after birth.
However, doctors say more research needs to be done.
It’s well-documented that mothers can pass antibodies from vaccine, such as for the influenza, through the placenta. Additionally, it was already known that mothers who previously had the coronavirus can pass antibodies to their newborns.
