Community boxing initiative, Gloves over Guns recently hosted an art auction at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston with the proceeds going to help kids in urban areas.
Earlier this year, president of the Jamaica Boxing Board, Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones explained what Gloves over Guns is all about.
“Fighting crime cannot rest with our policemen and women, it has to be an intervention from the community and its people. This is what Gloves Over Guns is about.
“There is the need for us to come together and bridge the gap between adults and at-risk-youth for peace. We are happy to have the support of LASCO as we work to mentor our young people in managing conflict resolution and dealing with the many challenges they face.”
The event was organised by Michelle Jones and the works of Marina Burnel -the subject of the auction- which received a favourable reception.
Marina Burnel is a talented street photographer and her work captures the essence of living in urban communities the length and breadth of Jamaica.
Among those spotted at the Gloves Over Guns auction were ICWI’s Paul Lalor, Musson’s boss P.B. Scott and his sister Melanie, Senator Tom Tavares-Finson and his wife Rose, Head of Marketing at Ramble Media Group Kiran Kerr, management consultant Charmaine Prawl, French Ambassador to Jamaica Denys Wibaux, Canadian High Commissioner to Jamaica Laurie Peters and Digicel’s Head of Business Darragh Selby.
Jason Robinson, CEO of Solar Buzz Jamaica did a fine job as the auctioneer for the evening.
