Today marks three years since NBA legend Kobe Bryant became an Oscar winner.
And if you’re wondering what movie role he won for, it wasn’t for acting.
Bryant won the Oscar for best animated short film at the Academy Awards in 2018.
The film, Dear Basketball, was based on a poem he wrote for The Payers’ Tribune to announce his retirement in 2015.
The five and a half minute film was animated and directed by Glean Keane with music provided by John Williams, who previously did work on classics such as Star Wars and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
It’s an ode to the sport that Bryant gave most of his adult life to, including lines such as “I fell in love with you / A love so deep I gave you my all / From my mind and body / To my spirit and soul.”
Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash in the Calabasas hills in January 2020. His daughter, Gianna, and seven others also perished.
