Kobe Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, has hit back at her mother’s lawsuit which claims she is owed for years of work and additional support promised by the deceased basketballer.
The lawsuit, filed by Sofia Urbieta Laine, claims Kobe Bryant promised to take care of her for life.
Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life, and that wasn’t good enough.”– Vanessa Bryant in her statement
Additionally, it said Vanessa defaulted on her husband’s promise and has taken every measure to “void and cancel” all of them.
However, Vanessa Bryant said her mother was allowed to live for free in one of their properties but was not promised anything or discouraged from providing for herself.
In a statement, she said “She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request. She now wants to back charge me US$96 per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers.”
Vanessa Bryant said earlier this year she began looking for a new home for her mother and that her mother gave a TV interview claiming she was being forced out of the home and to return a luxury car.
“Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life, and that wasn’t good enough,” Vanessa Bryant said. “She, instead, contacted me through intermediaries — contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn’t changed — and demanded US$5 million, a house and a Mercedes SUV.”
Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, 13, and seven others died in a helicopter crash in California on January 26.
Vanessa Bryant is reported to have inherited control of an estate worth up to US$600 million.
