Pope Francis has cancelling his public appearances due to nerve pain.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Pope Francis will miss three appearances in the coming days due to a “recurrence of sciatica”.

The 84-year-old was forced to skip New Year’s ceremonies in St Peter’s Basilica due to nerve pain.

The flare-up has also raised questions about a March 3-8 trip to Iraq. Such trips can be gruelling due to the multiple engagements scheduled for the Pope each day.

Francis has spoken openly about his sciatica in the past. It is a form of pain in the lower body caused by compression or irritation on nerve roots or on the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower spine down the thigh.
