13-year-old girl dies from dengue in St Vincent and the Grenadines

St Vincent and the Grenadines has recorded another dengue-related death, bringing to six the number of people who have died as a result of the mosquito-borne viral illness.

The Ministry of Health said, on Friday, that the latest victim is a 13-year-old female student who had been a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital for more than 10 days. It said the child received extensive care from the dedicated health care team.

The death comes one day after the ministry revised from six to five, the number of persons who had died of the illness.

It said on Thursday that one person previously classified as dying from severe dengue fever has been determined to have had dengue fever but died from other causes.

The ministry said that 655 laboratory-confirmed cases of dengue fever have been reported in the country for 2020 as of Tuesday.

The deaths make it by far the worst outbreak of the illness in the country in more than a decade.
