Barbados Gov’t seeking to give fathers paternity leave

Barbados Minister of Labour and Social Partnership Relations Colin Jordan announced some good news for Bajan fathers to be.

Barbados Labour Minister Colin Jordan says paternity leave coming for fathers.

If all goes to plan, Bajan fathers will be receiving paid leave from their jobs to assist in the care of their newborn babies.

“The paternity leave will be statutory, like maternity leave. It [is] our proposal that it will be paid leave as well. Our proposal further is that it will be taken around the time of birth…, no later than a few months after birth,” Jordan was quoted as saying.

He was speaking on the second day of the House’s debate on the 2020-2021 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure.

The relevant Cabinet paper, it has been reported, has already been drafted with his Ministry’s proposal on what the pending legislation would look like. The document has been circulated for comment from the relevant stakeholders.
