COVID-19 Watch: Belize joins elite club of Caribbean nations with zero active coronavirus cases

A growing number of Caribbean countries are taking the fight to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, bringing the rate of infection to a complete stop.

Belize, since Tuesday (May 5), now joins Suriname and Anguilla in an elite club of territories without any active cases of infection, hospitalisation or deaths. St Vincent was the first island nation to achieve the distinction on March 30, however, new infections have since emerged.

As at 1:12 pm, Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Wednesday, May 6, some 14,227 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed across 31 islands and territories in the region.

Deaths have increased slightly over the last 24-hour period, with an additional 12 patients dying from coronavirus-related complications. The death toll now stands at 647.
