COVID-19 Watch: Caribbean islands inch closer to 17,000 confirmed infections

Some 16,997 people have been confirmed infected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Caribbean, data from 31 affected countries and territories show.

As at 1:30 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT), an encouraging 5,255 recoveries have been officially declared, with 718 coronavirus-related deaths also being reported.

Dominican Republic: 287 new cases; 10,634 confirmed. 393 patients have died. (2,870 patients have recovered)

Puerto Rico: 43 new cases; 2,299 confirmed. 114 patients have died. (*No information available on recoveries)

Cuba: 17 new cases; 1,783 confirmed. 77 patients have died. (1,229 recoveries)

Jamaica: Three new cases; 505 confirmed. Nine patients have died. (90 recoveries)

Haiti: 27 new cases; 209 confirmed. 16 patients have died. (17 recoveries)

Aruba: No new cases; 101 confirmed. Three patients have died. (89 recoveries)

The Bahamas: One new case; 93 confirmed. 11 patients have died. (39 recoveries)

Barbados: Two new cases; 84 confirmed. Seven patients have died. (57 recoveries)

Cayman Islands: Three new cases; 84 confirmed. One patient has died. (47 recoveries)

Sint Maarten: No new cases; 76 confirmed. 15 patients have died. (46 recoveries)
