Cuba defeated the US Virgin Islands 6-0 at the National Stadium on Friday (Oct 4) to claim leadership of the Caribbean Football Union’s Group B Olympic Games qualifiers.
The Cubans have advanced to six points, three more than Jamaica, St Lucia and Barbados. The US Virgin Islands are yet to score a point.
Cuba’s position at the top might only be temporary, as group favourites Jamaica, will play Barbados in the second match at the same venue. Cuba’s victory was achieved through braces from Katheryn Valdez, Yoana Gonzalez and Lilian Sandoval. Valdez netted in 45th and 50th minutes, Gonzalez in the seventh and 33rd and Sandoval in the 38th and 51st.
