Mowatt, Jamaica’s only representative in the event, went out hard and was among the leaders at the final turn at the top of the 100 metres, but faded as the other athletes made up ground and moved past him.

Mowatt ran 49.32 seconds as the event was won by Alison Dos Santos of Brazil, who clocked a personal best of 48.35 seconds, with Yasmani Copello of Turkey second in a season best of 48.39.

The first two places in each of the three-race semi-finals automatically qualify for the final with the other two places being filled by the two best times in three races.
