Stephanie-Ann McPherson won Heat Three of the women’s 400 metres at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday to advance to the final.
McPherson tracked her rivals for the first 200 metres and stepped up the tempo to take the lead coming into the homestretch. She kept in front of her rivals and did enough to move away from them when challenged.
McPherson’s time of 50.70 seconds was the slowest winner of the three semi-finals heats, but earned her a spot in the final as the winner, with second-placed Justyna Swiety-Ersetic of Poland also advancing as automatic qualifiers. Swiety-Ersetic was timed in 50.96.
Third place went to Kendal Ellis of the United States of America, who clocked 51.58 seconds.
