Dwyer ran a hard curve and was among the leaders coming into the straight, but was challenged at the top of the 100 metres. He ran hard to separate himself from the rest of the field and pressed somewhat at the end to secure the third automatic spot.

Dwyer ran 20.37 seconds with Aaron Brown of Canada winning the heat in 20.10 seconds as Miguel Francis of Great Britain ended second in 20.11 seconds.
