Flight destined for Jamaica aborted after man declares he has coronavirus

A WestJet flight destined for Montego Bay, Jamaica on Monday (Feb 3) was forced to return to Canada after a man declared he had the coronavirus.

Flight WS2702 departed Pearson International Airport at around 10:00 a.m. and was about halfway through its journey, when a man took to the aisle and told a plane full of people that he had the virus.

The WestJet pilot, following protocol for infectious diseases as outlined by Health Canada, radioed and returned the flight to Toronto.

The 29-year-old man, who is a resident of Thornhill,Ontario, was arrested upon arrival at the airport and has since been charged with mischief.

Canadian police say they believe the incident was a prank; with health officials saying the man’s claim was “unfounded.”

WestJet has since apologized to the 243 passengers affected by what they described as an “unfortunate situation.”

The incident caused delays for the carrier, which is on Tuesday (Feb 4) expected to add an additional flight to Jamaica, as a remedy for those passengers affected.
