Guyanese ‘uncle’ gets life for raping 5-year-old girl

A Guyanese man is to serve a life sentence for raping a 5-year-old girl.

The man who has been dubbed by local media ‘Uncle Alex’ had a life sentence handed down to him though he did not appear in court on Thursday (June 17).

In May, 22-year-old Alex Garraway, was convicted by a jury for engaging in sexual penetration with the victim between November 1, 2018, and April 30, 2019.

He was also convicted for sexually assaulting the child, with the court hearing that Garraway performed the sexual act of touching and placed his penis the child’s buttocks.

Garraway is said to have absconded from the court, however a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Despite Garraway’s absence, his attorney Ravindra Mohabir made a plea of mitigation on his behalf, telling the court that his client can be rehabilitated.

Before imposing the sentence, Justice Reynolds said consideration was given to the nature and circumstances under which the offence was committed noting that it was the responsibility of the court to protect“little defenceless girls” in society.

In imposing the life sentence on Garraway, Justice Reynolds ordered that 20 years be spent in jail before Garraway is eligible for parole.
