Lawrence polled 4,862 votes to the People’s National Party’s incumbent Member of Parliament Luther Buchanan’s 4,851. Haile Mika’el, an independent candidate, received 36 votes.

Lawrence’s win comes after a tie was declared for the initial count. Subsequently, the tie was broken by the Returning Officer who pulled Buchanan’s name from a box with the tied candidates.

Lawrence picked up 28 ballots that were previously rejected while Buchanan received 18 of the 117 boxes counted.

With the victory, the JLP sees its victory at the national polls increase to 49 seats to the PNP’s 14.

It’s the first time in four decades that the JLP has held all parliamentary seats in Westmoreland.
