Joe Biden revokes Donald Trump’s attempted ban on TikTok in US

An attempt by former US President Donald Trump to ban Chinese-owned social media platforms TikTok and WeChat in the United States is being revoked by the Joe Biden administration.

Instead, the White House says it will now conduct its own review aimed at identifying national security risks with software applications tied to China.

It released a new executive order on Wednesday which directed the Commerce Department to undertake what officials describe as an “evidence-based” analysis of transactions involving apps that are manufactured or supplied or controlled by China.

According to the new order, officials are particularly concerned about apps that collect users’ personal data or have connections to Chinese military or intelligence activities.
