A man described as a repeat offender may have to assist with clean up work associated with the La Soufriere volcano, after he was caught stealing.
Reports are that the man had stolen a pair of sunglasses from a retail business in St Vincent’s capital on April 28.
Senior Magistrate Ricky Burnett said he was considering the clean-up work as part of the punishment for the man who was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for one year.
While speaking at the Kingstown Magistrate Court, Burnett further hinted that some offenders, as part of their sentences, may have to assist in clean up efforts in the red zone, when it is safe to do so.
The red zone was established following the latest eruption at the La Soufriere volcano on April 9, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people who were placed in temporary shelters.
