English Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly eying Barcelona star player Lionel Messi amid soaring tension in the Barcelona camp.
Messi recent feud with Barcelona’s sporting director Eric Abidal has roused the interest of Manchester City who have been reportedly monitoring the situation.
According to a report by ESPN, Man City are hoping to acquire Messi. It has been reported that the Argentine may have a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for free at the end of this season. His contract with Barcelona expires in 2021. Currently, his release clause stands at £593m but should he give 30 days notice he can depart for nothing.
City believe they would be frontrunners to land Messi should he decide to leave Camp Nou. Messi is said to have a strong relationship with Man City boss Pep Guardiola and the club’s hierarchy. The reigning Premier League champions are also one of the few clubs that are able match Messi’s current wages that exceed £50 million (€59m/$US64m) a year.
