Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz clobbered St Lucia 11-0 in their Caribbean Football Union Group B Olympic Games qualifying match at the National Stadium Sunday evening (Oct 6).
In the day’s opener, Barbados defeated the United States Virgin Islands 4-0.
Captain Khadija Shaw and Denisha Blackwood each scored a hat trick for Jamaica with Shaw netting in the third, 16th and 34th minutes of play and Blackwood getting goals in the 24th, 68th and 78 minutes. There were single strikes from Cheyna Matthews, Dominique Bond Flasza, Tiffany Cameron, Trudi Carter and Tarania Clarke.
The victory ensured that Jamaica separated themselves on points from Cuba, as both were locked on six points at the top of the points standing before the match. The Reggae Girlz are now on nine points, following 12-1 and 7-0 victories over Cuba and Barbados respectively.
Barbados and Cuba are on six points but Barbados have a goal difference of negative seven, while Cuba’s goal difference is zero, as the US Virgin Islands are yet to get off the mark, having lost all three matches. The Reggae Girlz are looking to top the Group B of the CFU round, to advance to the CONCACAF round of the qualifiers, where they will join giants the United States of America, Canada and Mexico. Also joining the CONCACAF round will be the winners of the two other CFU groups as well as the qualifiers from Central America.
