Football great, Lionel Messi, was the toast of the annual FIFA football event as he copped his sixth hold on the prestigious best male player of the year award.
Messi took the prize over perennial rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. Messi had a great year having led Barcelona to the Spanish La Liga crown and the semi finals of the Champions League where they were knocked out by Liverpool out of England.
It was a good night for English team Liverpool which copped the award for top goalkeeper while coach Jurgen Klopp took the coaching honours in that section.
At the event held in Milan, Italy, Cristiano Ronaldo was noticeably absent but was named in the FIFPro team of the year. Also named in the best eleven was Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric, Marcelo, De Ligt, Sergio Ramos and De Jong.
