New Zealand hit by 7.3 magnitude earthquake; tsunami warning issued

A tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas in New Zealand following a powerful earthquake there today.

There were no immediate reports of damages related to the 7.3 magnitude quake which struck off the island’s northeastern coast, according to the country’s emergency management agency.

The US Tsunami Warning System predicted waves of 0.3 to 1 metre (1 to 3.3 feet).

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered at a depth of 10 kilometres under the ocean about 178 kilometres northeast of the city of Gisborne.
