Brianna McNeal, the reigning Olympic sprint hurdles champion, has been suspended for a doping violation.
The provisional suspension comes after McNeal was charged with tampering with part of a doping control process, the Athletics Integrity Unit said today.
The provisional suspension means that McNeal, who led an American sweep of medals in the 100m hurdles at the 2016 Rio Olympics, will likely face a hearing to determine what, if any, official punishment is given.
The ongoing investigation means that the 2013 World Champion could miss this year’s rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games.
McNeal, who won both global titles using her maiden name Rollins, was previously banned for a year after failing to properly file whereabouts information for testing three times in a 12-month period which forced her to miss the 2017 World Championships.
