Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz were in scintillating form at the National Stadium Monday evening (Sept 30), as they clobbered Cuba 12-1 in their Group B Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Olympic Games qualifier.
Cheyna Matthews found the back of the net on four occasions, slotting home in the 20th, 31st, 62nd and 69th minutes. Tiffany Cameron scored twice in the 38th and 53rd.
Single strikes by Deneisha Blackwood in the fourth, Trudi Carter in the 14th and substitutes Reilly Paterson in the 72nd, Tarania Clarke in the 78th and Dominique Bond-Flasza in the 88th, as well as an own goal from Yarisleidy Mena in the 80th, assisted with the hammering.
Cuba got a consolation goal in the 55th minute through Yoana Calderon Gonzalez.
Jamaica are tucked comfortably at the top of Group B, as the massive win enabled them to lead on goal difference, as earlier in the afternoon, Barbados secured a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over St Lucia.
The Reggae Girlz must win the group to advance to the CONCACAF round of qualifiers. The CFU round has three groups, with only the winners advancing. Already in the CONCACAF round are giants United States of America, Mexico and Canada. The three zone winners from the CFU as well as the qualifiers from Central America will join them.
