Rodney Reed should be feeling a tad optimistic after the outpouring of support that has come his way since his planned execution became national and global news.
Reed is facing the death penalty after being convicted of the rape and murder of 19-year-old Stacy Stites in Bastrop, Texas in 1996. Since his conviction, he has continued to deny the charge.
However, it wasn’t until recently that persons became familiar with the case and celebrities, activists and lawmakers have begun the call to stop the execution through various petitions and other means.
Celebrities like Busta Rhymes, Beyonce, Rihanna, Meek Mill and Kim Kardashian have joined the chorus calling on Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Board of Parole to stop the execution.
Fortunately, a stay has been granted and it is expected to provide the opportunity for new information to be brought forward which the attorneys for Reed believe will exonerate him of this crime.
Since 2015, 48 persons have been executed in Texas under the stewardship of Gov Abbott with only one stay of execution. However, the family and friends of Reed are hoping that he will join that lesser number.
