Two weeks-old baby tests positive for coronavirus in Belize, mother negative

A two weeks old baby is Belize’s youngest COVID-19 victim. But concern looms over how the little one contracted the virus as the mother tested negative.

The baby returned a positive result on Wednesday (June 23) for the virus after experiencing seizures and fever. 

The child, who is from the Orange Walk District remains admitted to the Northern Regional Hospital.

The Orange Walk District continues to be a cause for concern for health officials as spikes continue to be recorded there. Five new cases were recorded on Tuesday (June 22) and The District is dealing with two active clusters of the infection, both in Trial Farm Village.

Since 2020 Belize recorded a total of 12,994 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 327 deaths.

Currently, the country has 153 active cases of COVID-19 and aggressive contact tracing is ongoing for those who show flu light symptoms. Meanwhile, 234 persons are under investigation.

The Belizean Ministry of Health has administered 106,000 vaccines and 26, 017 persons have been fully vaccinated which is 6.7 per cent of that population. While 79, 993 persons have been given one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.
