Vincentians are on high alert following reports of increased activity at the La Soufriere volcano.
The alert level has been raised to orange, third highest on the four-colour scheme, with the volcano said to have entered an “effusive eruption stage”.
Following the orange alert, residents were told to prepare to evacuate at short notice, should such an order be given.
“At relatively short notice, you may get – may get an order to evacuate if in fact we get the scientific information that an explosive eruption will be occurring or at least the likelihood,” Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves told citizens in the area.
The UWI-Seismic Research Centre is currently monitoring the situation in collaboration with local authorities.
Vincentians have been advised to not visit the volcano until a further update is provided.
