Arsenal Midfielder Granit Xhaka has been stripped of the captaincy following his verbal confrontation with fans of the club.
The 27-year-old Swiss international was involved in what can only be described as an angry exchange with the Arsenal faithful to jeers and boos during Arsenals’ 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on October 27. Xhaka directed expletives at fans.
Xhaka issued what many believed to be a ‘half-hearted’ apology last week but claimed he had “reached boiling point”. He explained that his reaction was as a result of ongoing social media attacks geared towards himself and his family.
‘Repeated abusive comments at matches and in social media over the last weeks and months have hurt me deeply.’— Granit Xhaka
He posted on Instagram: “My feeling of not being understood by fans, and repeated abusive comments at matches and in social media over the last weeks and months have hurt me deeply. People have said things like ‘We will break your legs’, ‘Kill your wife’ and ‘Wish that your daughter gets cancer’.”
